Behind the Brand with Love Camí

Love Camí is a Gold Coast-based intimates brand, founded by best friends, and now business partners, Phoebe Mueller and Madison Walsh. With a focus on vintage-inspired pieces that are more for you than anyone else, their first collection is dropping on September 10th. Read our interview with the brand's founders to learn more about their business journey.

You two have been friends for 7 years now. How did you meet, and would you ever have imagined starting a business together?
Definitely didn't think we would ever be on this roller coaster of starting a business especially at a young age. We met through an indoor netball team, and Madison became close friends with my sister Holly, we then all became super close and have always stayed close.
With both of you pursuing degrees in business, what drove you to start a fashion brand and how was the idea of Love Camí born?
We were driving one day, Phoebe was at the time working at a cafe, and I was flipping secondhand cars. When we were brain storming ideas around having our own brand, we wanted something that wasn't very common and came up with the idea of understated yet effortlessly classic lingerie.

Can you tell us a bit more about the vision behind the brand and how you would describe the Love Camí girl?
We wanted to address what we think is a potential gap in the market for lingerie that is more for yourself than for others. We are expressing this through our embroidery and more modest pieces.
From friends to business partners, how has your relationship evolved through the process of building a brand together?
We have definitely had our ups and downs but we are learning to conquer all of these together. Whilst we have had some disagreements on the way we both have a very similar vision for the business and we are loving combining our ideas and expressing them through our new pieces. We are definitely growing together and learning something new every day!
When juggling study and work, how do you two take time to work on the brand together?
We will set out what each person has to get done at the start of the week. If anything pops up and one of us is struggling to finish off what needs to be done we will help each other out. However, majority of the time we will work together on tasks as we live very close to each other.

Do you have any tips or advice for starting a product-based business that involves upfront investment?
We just recommend giving it a go! We both believe you can't get anywhere without taking some risks, so in this case finance is definitely one of those risks. Money does come back at the end of the day, we think it's worth the risk to try and do something that you love. We also are confident when it comes to certain products that there will be other ways to sell them such as a market stall so there are a few paths to go down to try make back the upfront investments.
What has been one of the biggest challenges you’ve overcome on your journey to launching Love Camí?
Our manufacturer was checking over the products and she had realised the embroidery colour was different for some of the products. She appreciates attention to detail and wants to provide the best quality so she insisted she remake the ones that differentiated. This was a huge set back though in regards to timing, we had hoped to drop a lot earlier and we begun losing some of our following because of the delay in time.

As current Business students, and now small business owners, what
is the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in the classroom, and the
most valuable lesson you’ve learned from the real life process of
building your brand?
Targeting the right audience's preferences, and investing in quality products for customers. We strive to focus solely on making our customers feel loved, confident and beautiful in their bodies.
What has been the biggest pinch-me moment in your journey so far?
Our engagement on our Instagram, we love that people are loving our pieces as much as us. We cannot wait to embark on this journey and we hope our customers love our work as much as us. We both have worked very hard, it's a lot of time, money and effort but we have enjoyed every single part of it.
